Kangaroo Island, one of South Australia’s prime holiday destinations, has just welcomed a stunning new addition to its tourism scene. Cove Landing Marina Apartments, nestled in the charming Christmas Cove at Penneshaw, officially opened its doors on July 31st. Ms. Susi Whitehead, Chair of the Kangaroo Island Tourist Association, had the honour of inaugurating this luxurious development, which boasts three exquisite two-bedroom apartments.

The real showstopper here is the unparalleled 270-degree view that these apartments offer. Guests are treated to a breathtaking panorama that spans north, east, and west, showcasing the island’s natural beauty in all its glory. Imagine waking up to the warm glow of the sunrise, casting its golden rays across the vast ocean, or witnessing the sky ablaze with colour as the sun dips below the horizon. With a bustling marina right in sight, there’s always something captivating to observe.

But the allure of Cove Landing doesn’t stop at its location. The apartments themselves are a tribute to the island’s rich maritime history. Each unit is named after a vessel that played a crucial role in connecting Kangaroo Island to the rest of the world, such as the YC Lily May, SS James Comrie, and SS Karatta. Stepping inside, you’ll be transported back in time with charming shaker style and vertical joint cabinetry, elegant wrought iron accents, and even a feature wall crafted from pieces of the old Kingscote Jetty. These thoughtful touches pay homage to the island’s early settlers and their enduring legacy.

The exterior of the apartments echoes this theme, resembling a traditional dockyard with heritage galvanized fencing and exposed galvanized iron. Developers and owners Susan Craig and Mark Simpkin, who have deep roots on the island, have poured their heart and soul into this project, which received much-needed support through the South Australian Government’s Tourism Industry Development Fund.

The construction of Cove Landing has provided a welcome economic injection for the island, employing local builders, tradespeople, and services. Minister for Tourism, Zoe Bettison, hailed the development as a celebration of Kangaroo Island’s world-renowned beauty and a prime example of operator innovation. With the region’s visitor economy currently valued at $219 million annually, she emphasised the importance of such initiatives in attracting visitors and encouraging them to extend their stay.
